So far this semester, I have been most inspired by Ada
Limon’s How to Triumph Like a Girl—not surprising, given my love of horses—and want to use that as a
departure point for my final project. In
a series of poems maybe accompanied by photographs, I want to attempt to shed
some light on the magnitude of a partnership with an equine athlete. What it’s like to experience that
relationship, and maybe in a series of potentially comedic persona poems, what
it must be like for the horse. I want to
focus on the various means of communication, and how humbling it is to yourself
in the dirt when this communication is ineffective or misinterpreted by your
partner.
Catherine, this will work. I would try alternating the poems according to the horse with the poems according to its owner/partner/rider. Maybe poems in dialogue? Look at Joy Harjo's poems about horses. The images/photographs will work particularly if there is something mysterious about their relation to the poems, rather than illustrative. And best if they are your own!
